Is this how the networks expect to make either hundreds of millions of dollars per year, or absolutely no money, depending on whether they're talking to shareholders or the writers' guild?
Color me skeptical about any browser-based video deployment. As soon I'm able to pay a buck or two for a high quality, ad- and DRM-free episode, I'll do it. But until then, it's yo ho ho and a bottle of rum for me.
this is a really simple solution. I don't want to track down a video. And if it's something that has to be high quality, I'll buy it also.
I do have to say though, I'm really blown away by what all it can do. For streaming video, it's high quality and full-screen (if you are logged in) and you can embed a show or clip from a show anywhere. The commercials are pretty small in terms of content to ad ratio. Plus it has a whole lot of shows. Old shows like Hill Street Blues and The Bob Newhart Show and new ones as well. In terms of streaming video online, I just don't care if it is DRMed or not. I hate DRM because it prevents me from doing what I want. And I don't want to burn these episodes onto a DVD or create a database of these shows. I just want to keep up with a few shows that are currently airing anywhere I am. This allows that.
I honestly expected this to be something that only works in IE and you have to sit through extended commercial sessions and you can only watch it without fullscreen and only on their site. And it's quite the opposite. This is a really huge step forward in terms of networks delivering what I want.
Hmmm
